Every wonder why so many art teachers use paper mache in their classrooms? From start to finish, it is a very inexpensive and easy medium to work with. Once the paper mache has dried there almost isn’t a wrong way to paint it. However, as with most things, there are tips to make the process easier.

Tips for painting paper mache:

-Allow the paper mache to completely dry before painting. This will ensure that all the moisture is out of your creation and will prevent your project from molding later on.

- When working with young children, use tempera paint mixed with soap flakes (such as Ivory Snow). This will make for an easy clean-up. Be sure to put a sealant on though because the paint could run if it your creation should accidentally get wet.

- When working with children make the last layer of paper mache paper towels. This makes the surface more absorbent and will require less paint to be used.

- For a clean look, make the last layer of paper mache white computer paper. This allows for the true color of the paint to come through.

-For older children and adults, use acrylic paints. Acrylic paints dry with a clearer finish and stand up to moisture better than tempera paint. This is especially critical if you live in a humid area.

-Allow each coat of paint to dry before adding more paint. This keeps your project looking neat. Painting on paint that hasn’t dried can cause smearing, streaking, and can cause the first layer of paint to peel away from the paper mache.

-For a quick base coat use a sponge brush. I like using sponge brushes for my base coats and any large areas. Then I use smaller, bristled brushes to add details.

-Experiment with different techniques. Once you are used to painting on paper mache don’t stick to just brushes. Use sponges, stencils, and sprays to create a project as original as you are.

-To make your project last longer seal it with a clear acrylic spray.

Whatever you decide to make with paper mache, be it a pinata or a mask, know that finishing it off with paint is an easy and fun way to decorate it. Be creative and have fun.
