Let Plaster Art Get Your Drywall Business Through The Winter Slow Season

However, as news spread of the revival of this lost art, I began to receive more and more calls from drywall contractors and builders across the nation quizzing me about the possible application of these techniques in their drywall/plaster business.

The typical slow down in winter due to harsher building conditions (and now the recent downturn in the housing industry) commonly left a gaping hole in revenues for businesses of this nature.

Decorating Easter eggs: Psychedelic style

This Easter, turn your decorated eggs into groovalicious masterpieces! Here are ten easy ways to give your Easter Eggs Psychedelic Style! These unique eggs will be unlike any you’ve ever tried before!

* When dying eggs, ONLY eggs that have been dyed and decorated with FDA approved dye kits should be consumed. If there is any doubt about whether an egg is edible, discard of it. A safer way is to have some eggs for decorating, and others just for eating.

Start with hardboiled eggs, of course, and try any (or a combination!) of these tricks:

1. Tie-Dyed Eggs

What says Psychedelic Style more than Tie-Dying? Wraps rubber bands, and small strips of cloth or tape around eggs. Starting with darkest dye first, dip egg into dye, submerging egg all the way. Pull it out, allow it to dry, and remove some of the coverings, but not all. Re-dip in a different, lighter dye. Repeat process until you have several different colors on your egg.

2. Jamaican Me Crazy!

These are SO cute! If you can knit or crochet, this will be a FAST project for you. Simply knit a tiny Rasta Man hat and put it on top of an egg. Use black, green, yellow, and red yarn. You might as well make several while you have your yarn out. Once you see the first one, you will know your little Rasta Man needs friends. To make little bitty dreadlocks, take some doll hair and mix it with a combination of 3 parts water to one part Elmer’s glue. Roll doll hair into dreadlocks and allow to dry. Stick it to top of egg and put little hat on to hide where you glued it on. Glue on googly eyes and paint a little smile on your egg. Psychedelic indeed.

3. Stenciled Eggs

You can use store bought stencils or make your own simple stencils. Just press the stencil to the egg and dab dye on with a sponge. Usually it works best to start with eggs that have by pre-dyed a light color. Reverse stenciling works just as well. You can get shape or letter stickers and write a message, then peel them off after they dye has dried. Simple and fun.

4. Wax on Wax Off

Draw or write on eggs with melted wax or a crayon. Now dip them into the dye and watch as the dye does not stick to the waxy areas.

5. Kiss-alicious Eggs

Start by dipping eggs in pink, purple, and fuchsia dye. After they dry, put on LOTS of lipstick (sparklier is better) and plant firm kisses on the eggs. Try redying after you have left lipstick marks. Like the Wax on Wax off trick above, this works well since most lipsticks repel the dye.

Home decor: How to add interest to a front door

A front door is more than just a piece of wood; it is the first thing that visitors see of your home. It sets an impression in their minds that will be difficult to overcome if it is a bad one. You don’t want your front door to be boring or worse yet, damaged. Here are a few ideas for dressing up your front door.

1. Paint.

If the paint is peeling, that’s easy to fix. Buy a gallon of paint thinner and strip off the old before putting on that new color. Make sure to use an exterior latex paint. Using an interior paint on an exterior surface will result in fading, peeling, cracking, and general ugliness after just a short period of time. Using a quality latex exterior paint will ensure that your work doesn’t go to waste! You put in the time to paint that door, let it stay painted for a while.

2. Stenciling.

Stencils are a good way to add some detail without having to get a new door. They are also nice because the stenciling can be covered up with paint if you get tired of it or want to change the look. Buy stencil cream and special stencil brushes before beginning to make sure the project goes smoothly. You may also want to use stencil adhesive, which will keep your stencil sticking to the surface and prevent paint from bleeding around the edges.

3. A fancy door knocker.

A nice door knocker will give your home a lot of class. The lion door knocker is a real classic and comes in many different finishes. A distressed or rusted finish will give it a great “Goth” look, while a shiny new one smacks of aristocracy. Lions were always a symbol of royalty in Europe, and they still say “class” today. You can’t go wrong with a lion.

However, if you prefer something different, there are all kinds of botanical door knockers that look like vines and flowers. You can also get a dragon of mermaid door knocker if you prefer a fanatasy theme. A house with a fantasy door knocker will enchant any visitor as soon as he crosses the doorstep.

4. A great doorbell.

Not only one that sounds great, one that looks fancy too. Nice doorbells are getting easier to find, so take a look by shopping online or browsing through a hardware store.

Tips for painting old furniture

Try these methods for painting old furniture. People in antiques have strong opinions about painting furniture. They almost always think the grain in wood furniture should be seen. Thankfully, I’ve never seen any antiques police – so I often paint furniture with different effects.

Sand the piece of old furniture lightly first. Using any flat,light colored paint, apply the first layer. Using a mini roller gives an interesting orange peel surface. When it’s dry, be sure to examine whether it looks thin, and needs a second coat. If so, do so, as the later steps of the process won’t cover the lack of quality in the first one. Next, using the same color with a darker tint, sponge lightly all over the piece of old furniture.

Using a stencil with bows and streaming ribbons, or ivy vines go around the edges with the stenciling. The stencils don’t need to be perfect. If they are a little off, they might look more like folk art. If the whole stencil opening doesn’t get filled in, that’s o.k. too. It is better to go lightly with the paint, than too thickly. This is a piece of old furniture, it is supposed to look old and a little faded.

If there’s room on the piece of old furniture, a checkerboard stencil makes a really interesting piece. Sponge a light application of paint so some of the first layer shows through from time to time. Combine stencils with vining flowers going through the checkerboard.

Using the first two steps can also lead to a faux antiquing look. Sometimes a deeper colored first coat works for this method, but it must be flat paint. It’s very easy. Get an old one inch brush for this one, or get a cheapie disposable brush with natural bristles. Now get black or brown paint for the faux antiquing. This must be thinned out one part paint and two parts water. When the darker color is on the brush, wipe it off a bit. Now paint in the longest, unbroken strokes as possible, and imitate the look of wood grain. Stroke parallel to the edges of the old piece of furniture. On the legs, follow up and down with the brush strokes. Sometimes this looks good right in the beginning, but other times it is necessary to wipe some of the paint back off using the same direction as it was applied. There will still be one more opportunity to work with the wood grain affect, but the piece has to be dry before going into it with more of the wood grain look.

Another option is to let the piece dry for a longer time, and a masking technique can be used to create stripes, of alternating color. The stripes can be symmetrical, or not. They can even go in angles to each other on larger pieces. This method will require a wait of about three weeks to be sure the first paint layers are cured completely.

With a little imagination, the sky is the limit. Interesting sponge stamps are also a way to get a unique look. My favorite stamp is a fern leaf, but a lot of different designs are available at major craft stores.

A person who has confidence with painting can apply free hand artwork after the application of the flat paint. There are a lot of interesting painting techniques that will spruce up an old piece of furniture wonderfully.

Bedroom decor: How to design a Disney princess theme bedroom

Is there a young girl out there who doesn’t dream of being a princess at some time or other? Included in that dream is finding a handsome prince, of course, but also sleeping in a bedroom fit for a princess. It is easy to paint the walls pink, buy some ready made bedding with Belle or Cinderella on it and be done. But there is much more to being a princess than that!

Let’s start with the walls. Instead of painting them a standard shade of pink or white,why not try some of the new mineral paints that have a bit of sparkle to them. A creamy beige with tiny flecks of gold sparkle will really make your young lady feel like she is in a magical castle.

Along the baseboard add a surprise or two like a small mouse hiding in a pumpkin patch. Bluebirds painted near the ceiling will complete the Cinderella feel. Just remember, subtle is the key here. Be careful not to use paints that are too bright or you will lose the feel.

Move on to the window treatments. For light control and privacy you probably have blinds or shutters already hung. This will allow you to add lots of fluffy sheers to the windows. Measure your window and triple the width for maximum fullness. Hang the panels from standard curtain rods on either side of the window. Then start adding the “princess” touches. Wrap a length of artificial pink roses around the top of the rod as a valance. As tiebacks, gather several lengths of satin ribbon in princess colors such as pink,fuchsia,and gold and pull the panels back and attach to a cup hook hidden behind the curtains. You can embellish these tieback ribbons with more roses or sparkly tassels etc.

The most important feature in the room will be the bed. Choose a headboard with tall posts on either side. If you are on a budget, purchase an unfinished headboard and paint and stencil it yourself. A soft white with gold accents around the poles and stenciling on the headboard would be perfect. As a stencil, roses would work well and are easy to do. But if you are really talented, try painting a soft watercolor of a castle in the distance with fields of flowers in front of it. This will make the headboard look a bit more like a mural but will make your little princess feel like she is sleeping in a castle and looking out over the grounds. Or you can simply stencil a gold crown at the top of the headboard for a simpler look.

Accessories in this room will really complete the look. Hang a sparkly chandelier over her bedside table for a really elegant feel. An oval mirror hung with a beautiful pink satin ribbon over her dresser is a must when she is asking “Mirror, Mirror on the wall…”. A fluffy shag rug on the floor will keep her feet warm on those cold mornings. You can not be a princess if you don’t have a crown! Make sure her crown is prominently placed on top of a bookcase or her dresser for all to see. And don’t forget photos of the rest of her “royal family”. Hang photos of the King “Dad”, the Queen “Mom”, and any other members of the family on the wall. For an interesting effect, instead of using regular wooden frames, attach the photos to the wall with glue that will not remove the paint, and paint frames around each photos. For functional artwork,purchase wooden letters that spell out her name, or the word princess,add a dowel to the bottom of each letter and you have hanging space for clothing or all her “jewels.” These letters can be found at most craft stores in different sizes.

This is a look that will spark any little girl’s imagination and will satisfy your little princess for years to come.

I just received my stencils and I can’t wait to use them. Before buying the book I tried to find a list of all the stencils included, but couldn’t…so here’s the list:

8- 3-d effect “stair steps”

The only complaint I have is that the “book” is really just a few pages stuck onto the box that holds the stencils, and the box flaps all interlock over them to close. Neat looking to be sure, but its a little awkward to use. I wish they had just included a separate little book.

Stencil 101 by Ed Roth is one of those books that encourages you to tear out its pages. It contains 25 reusable stencils on glossy cardstock. And the very day it came in the mail my son was already pulling out the stencils and using them on a wooden case that was just screaming out for customization. And, hey, if something passes the teen boy test for coolness it must be pretty special. And he must be somebody special, too, because I let him use the book before I did.

I know it’s been said so many times that it’s ridiculous but really… these aren’t your granny’s stencils. You won’t find any English ivy or country geese here. We’re talking muscle cars and luchadores.

At the beginning is a brief history of stenciling and then a nice chapter on the basic stuff needed to get started. Then the author shows several projects using the stencils in the book. I wanted the book just for my journal pages but now I’m thinking my kitchen cabinets need an edgier look to them.

The book has a nice expandable pocket in the back to keep your used stencils in. As I mentioned earlier the stencils are on cardstock, glossy on both sides so you can flip them either way. They should hold up to many many sprays. Even after you pull out the stencil there is a page left in the book that shows the design so you can still flip through the book to know what designs you have without digging them all out of the pocket. Or if it came down to it and you lost your stencil and were too cheap to buy another you could scan the image and cut another.

Speaking of buying stencils, Ed has lots of them available at his website, Stencil [...] He also has his own line of spray inks. And don’t forget to check out the awesome how-to videos while you’re there.

I bought this book on a whim. After going through the book and looking at all the great stencils, this is a great buy for the price. I am a mixed media artist. Stenciling is fun and as the author advocates in this project filled book, anyone can do it. Besides being fun and easy, it is a great way to bring old objects back to life in a new way. After an introduction that gives you the basics of what you need to know such as the types of tools you need, different surfaces and what they will need, along with different ways to stencil, and numerous other helpful nuggets of information, it is on to the projects.

The first project is the “Sliver Mist Skirt” (Page 29) that consists of a lily pattern painted on a black skirt originally purchased at a thrift store. Various designs for chairs, tables, dressers, walls and more clothing as well as many other items follow. I especially liked the Mayan designs on glass storage containers (Page 48), the “Serpent Stone” (Page 81) and the “Sea Bath” stencil project for bathroom accessories found on page 96. Color and versatility are important throughout the book as well as creating your own personal design and image.

The book includes seven pages of stencil motifs so that you can photocopy them and transfer the designs, two pages of short biographies on the various designers, a one page index and twenty ready to use stencils in the attached sealed bag.

Designed for fun, this book is sure to be a hit for all ages. With a hardback binding encasing a spiral notebook format, the books lays open flat for ease of use which is also a nice touch. Colorful and bright it provides plenty of textual information and large pictures to help you have fun stenciling.

This book turned out to be even more helpful and inspiring than I had hoped for. It answered many questions relating to different varieties of simple hand printing techniques such as: which inks, papers, and fabrics are best suited for each project; how to create stencils; how to transfer designs, how to repeat a pattern, how to work with screens, and on and on. There are many color photos showing step-by-step procedures. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. A lot of the printing projects are done on simple, natural fabrics like linen and muslin.

The book itself is a spiral-bound, soft-cover book within a hard cover shell. This allows you to lay the pages flat so that you can look at them hands-free as you work.

I love this book. I was already familiar with many types of printing such as linoleum and gocco, but I still learned a great deal. So I would have to say this book is for novices and experienced alike.

I guarantee you that you will come away from this book inspired and ready to create.

Although this is a cute idea, the openings/lines on the stencils are so narrow that the points of the colored pencils do not easily fit into them. This frustrates my daughter (who is almost 6 years old and LOVES to draw/color/doodle). Otherwise, in theory, it’s a neat product….it just requires redesigning with wider openings in which to fit the pens/pencils/markers.

I was able to layout the court and paint it in about 45 minutes. The template is well marked and easy to use. All tt took was measuring the starting point and the rest of the court (including the three point line) all fell into place. After it dried I was able to repack the template for use again after I sealcoat my drive in the spring….

I did quite a bit of research and found that this was the only template out there. For the price, I expected much more out of this product. I was very discouraged to find that it was almost impossible to ensure the accuracy of all the measurements. The advertised picture indicates that the key and 3 point line touch the out of bounds line. That is not true. They come up about 3 feet short, so you have to extend them, once you have made your own out of bounds line. This kit is just short of a jigsaw puzzle. Once you get all the pieces laid out and taped down, you have to do a tremendous amount of cutting. I wish the manufacturer would have included a picture of the template with the dashed lines, just so that it would not have been such a disappointment when I started to lay it out. I read all the feedback on this and it was all positive. I guess those folks were OK with having their court marked out with dashed lines. Once you cut out all the bridged pieces to get solid lines, the template it not reusable. It took 3 1/2 cans of paint and I still need to fill in the end of the key and three point line to get them to touch the out of bounds line.

Bottom line: I am happy with the end result, but am very disappointed in some of the missing/misleading information from the manufacturer.

This product has been so much fun!!! I wish I would’ve started when I was still pregnant. I’ve been at it now for a couple of months and am not yet done.

I would recommend buyers purchase their own painting tools. These items are relatively inexpensive, and the ones that come in the kit aren’t that great. I spent about 5-10 bucks on painting tools, and it was well worth it. The acrylic paint is what gets you, in terms of cost, anyways. I probably spent about 100 bucks on paint, maybe more.

The stencils begin losing a lot of their sticky after about 8-10 applications. So for the grass, picket fence, and other stencils you will use repeatedly, use them in high priority areas first.

The stencils still work very well on texturized walls.

If you are painting the room a base color, I would wait several days before using the stencils. The paint may otherwise lift up. The instructions say that you can also sprinkle some baby powder on the stencils to make them less sticky (which supposedly lessens the risk of lifting the paint underneath). I was paranoid so I tried this, and it was a waste of a stencil. It lost it’s sticky almost entirely, and was not at all necessary. Luckily it was a stencil I only needed to use once.

It’s tempting to add the butterflies, birds, bugs, etc. in the beginning, but I would recommend waiting until your tree, flowers, fence, grass, and other big items are painted.

I painted the flowers on the tree three difference colors, and it didn’t look so good. Not awful, but not great. Now the stencil has lost it’s sticky, so I am going back now and hand-painting all of the flowers the same color.

For fun I also purchased some glitter paint (clear paint with some sparkles in it). This was a nice touch on the bees wings, and other places that could use some uumph.

Very fun activity. So glad I bought it!

Tips for effective stenciling of a border

A stenciled room has a charm all of its own. Follow this simple guide to stenciling attractive and effective borders, and enhance the look of your home.

As well as looking very attractive, a stenciled border can have an architectural impact, in the same way as a wallpaper border. It can highlight existing features such as arches and fireplaces, and make featureless interiors more interesting.

In a room with bare walls, a stenciled border can add character and subtly alter the proportions of the room, making it look more elegant, or cozier.

A stenciled border can be used at skirting board, dado or picture rail level, or immediately below the ceiling to make it seem lower. Around windows and doors a stenciled border frames and decorates in the same way as a wallpaper border, but with a more individual character.

Also, of course, any part of a border stencil can be picked out and reproduced as a separate motif on items of furniture and accessories, for a coordinated room color and pattern scheme.

A stenciled border can be continuous or non-continuous. A continuous border is a line of motifs repeated without any breaks.

Usually the stencil is self-overlapping, and made from clear acetate so that you can easily register the overlaps.

A non-continuous border is a line of repeated but separate motifs and is made with a stand-alone stencil. The stencil can be made of acetate or card; acetate is often easier to use as it is flexible and transparent.

Stenciling a border isn’t difficult if you use a pre-cut stencil. It is also worth paying a little extra for proper stencil paint when stenciling a border; its quick drying properties allow you to work steadily around the room without having to keep stopping to wait for it to dry.

Careful planning is the key to a successful stenciled border. First decide on the position of the border. If you put it immediately above or below a dado or picture rail, or at ceiling height or skirting board level, you have a ready line to guide you.

Otherwise, use a spirit level to find the true horizontal, and lightly pencil a dotted line all the way around the wall to mark the top or bottom of the stencil, as appropriate.

Continuous stenciling

With a continuous border, start by marking the mid point of the most eye-catching section of wall. Center the first stencil above or below this mark as appropriate, then work away from it in both directions.
